Local and Underground: Neverafter (Little Rock, Arkansas)

Neverafter are comprised of former members of NonGrata, Ferrous Patella, Inhumane (which I heard way back in the 90's on local metal radio shows and LOVED), Fallen Empire (another undisputed favorite local act of mine) Quixotic and Cinders to Ascension.  So needless to say I was excited to listen to this band on Reverbnation.

Follow this link and give them a listen!

Neverafter have one of the best band names I've heard/saw in a long time!  They have created a complete package with the name, image, graphics and even call their fans Neverminds!  I love that about this new and upcoming band.  It's rare these days when a band can have an original and catchy name and then back it up with a sound, image and work ethic!  These guys are the local forerunners of this style and are sure to make some waves!  Here's the rundown on what I'm calling a modern traditional Gothic sound!

Lost In Waiting - Really beautiful and emotional guitar and piano/synth work in this song.  This is a power ballad for today's audience for sure and I wouldn't be shocked to hear this song on the radio and it certainly deserves to be.  This is a pretty low key song but is solid and all members you can tell are accomplished musicians and you can hear that they put hours into practicing.  The lead work and drum fills are impressive and the vocals are on point although she doesn't show much of her range in this tune.  I'm impressed and ready to hear more!

Once Feared Fate - Now this one is a bit heavier and shows more of Lisa's vocal range.  There are some blues stylings in the guitar work that I like and there is a melodic, atmospheric and emotional breakdown that I thoroughly enjoy!  The guitar solo on this song rips too!

Debt To Pay - This is probably the fastest of the three songs yet but still mid tempo.  I like this one the best  and feel like this should be the song that they push to get their name out there.  The riffs and melodies are simple yet effective and then it kicks in with some heavyness that I was kind of looking for all along.  Still again a solid and enjoyable listen!

This is a damn fine effort!  If these guys aren't on the radio soon it's of no fault of their own because they are surely putting in the effort and passion.  I only draw comparisons for reference but I hear influences from modern gothic rock like Evanescence, traditional sounds like Priest, and more epic metal and new traditional leanings like Night Wish and Hammerfall.  The sound quality on these recordings is excellent for a demo.  Everything seemed to sound kind of far away but once I was well into the second song I didn't notice it any more.  And maybe this is something that could be remedied with a final mastering.  After all they are still in the studio and recording more!  I wished I could pick out more bass parts in these songs and maybe it would benefit from just a hair more volume on the bass all around.  Hands down though this is heavy radio rock with metal tendencies.  This is a style that lots of different rock and metal listeners can wrap their ears around and enjoy.

Go find them on Facebook and like everything on their page!  They are very active on there and give their Neverminds lots of updates!

Friday the 13th Original vs Remake

In this edition of Original vs. Remake I tackle Friday the 13th!  Now before anyone gets their undies in a wad let me go ahead say the newest Friday the 13th was NOT a remake.  Maybe I'm just naive (and I've been known to be) but this whole time I thought it was a damn remake!  After watching the special features I realized that the 2009 Friday is actually a 're-telling' for new audiences.  Well if your a noob to the Friday the 13th movies here's a little run down on which one you should watch.  If your a super fan then make sure to slam me in the comment section.

Friday The 13th (1980)

Friday the 13th uncut on dvd.  I'm not thrilled about the way this movie opens up but it does the job with setting the tone and grabs you from the beginning.  The use of first person camera shots was probably a first of it's time and creates a sense of perspective from the unknown killer.  I love the wide shots where you can get a view of entire rooms or settings.  There's some hot make out scenes and the ladies (or gents...whatever) even get a glimpse of Kevin Bacon's butt!  And then this happens.

For it's time this movie had some unique kill scenes that are still entertaining to this day, and the way they portray teen delinquency is classic and spot on for the 80's.  The uncut ending lacks the punch  that the original ending does and I prefer the cut version of this movie.  Even still this is an undisputed classic that is essential viewing for seasoned horror fans and novices alike.

Check out the trailer!

Friday The 13th (2009)

This is a first response the the "remake" on the 'Killer Cut' DVD rented from Netflix.  At the very beginning it's giving away the original's ending but to it's credit it's already way scarier than the original.  This movie is not a scene for scene remake and it would be a stretch to even call it a re-imagining.  To me, this is a bona fide sequel that borrows select scenes from previous movies and has been unjustly called a 're-start'.  Even though I said it was scarier it did start to lull a bit to where it felt like run of the mill garbage and then the sleeping bag scene happened and completely changed my mind again.  And then the cabin scene happened!  And all of this before the opening credits!!  And you don't want to miss this!

The acting is pretty good for a movie where all the characters are 25 years old and a perfect 10, which kinda gets old with these movies to the point where it's almost standard.  But it has some very good elements that balance out the average stuff.  Like a healthy amount of nudity and some hot promiscuity!  This movie is very dark and shadowy and best watched in a dark room so you can see everything.  Even though I had some criticisms this is a damn good Jason movie with lots of interesting scenes and traps.  Characters are true to the genre and the kills are exciting and fun and the new take on the music at the end credits is haunting and awesome!

Check out the trailer!

So which one should you be watching?  If your new to the Friday the 13th franchise watch the original 1980 movie.  You won't have an appreciation for the new movie if you don't.  If your a fan but have been reluctant to watch the "remake" like I was don't worry and just watch it.  Just remember it is not a remake or a retelling or even a re-start really.  It's only a sequel.

Horror High Review - No Budget Disco Slasher

Horror High (1974)

If you think your in for the same experience as Return To Horror High you will be sorely disappointed.  This movie is a trippy, no budget, home movie style, 70's disco freak out.  A nerdy high school kid takes out his revenge on students and staff alike with lots of blood and basic but cool special and make up effects.  Essentially this is a Jeckell and Hyde story with a the obligatory but fun references.  The kills are fun and interesting especially for a 70's movie and the acting is surprisingly good for being so slow moving and amateurish.  The film quality is grainy and has that VHS quality to it which just adds to the feel of this old school slasher style movie.  Kvlt

I Sell The Dead Review - Bury Shaun And Ash And Dig Up A New Slab Of Horror Fun

I Sell The Dead (2008)

Streaming on Netflix this horror comedy was top notch entertainment!  Starring Dominic Monaghan (Lost, LOTR), Angus Scrimm (Phantasm, Subspieces, Chopping Mall) and Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy, Hellboy)!  This movie starts off with some cool animated intro credits with music that reminded me of Young Frankenstein and Clue.  There are many layers of old school styles and the camera work is top notch.  It jumps back and forth with narration much like Interview With A Vampire and there is some nice comic style animation here and there like the old Tales From The Crypt episodes!  This is a must see movie!  Essential, 420

Vampire Journals Review - A Must For Full Moon And Subspecies Fans

Vampire Journals (1997)

This beautiful movie is basically a spin off of Subspieces, one of my favorite vampire series ever and directed by Ted Nicolaou (also of Subspecies) and released by Full Moon productions.  In Vampire Journals we are introduced to the character Ash, who makes an appearance in Subspecies 4 later.  This film is beautiful and starts off with a snowy cemetery scene and fantastic piano music that lasts throughout the movie.  This movie was surely a late influence on my personal aesthetics and ideas of what is darkly gorgeous.  Vampire Journals has everything I love from Full Moon; romance, lighting, settings and a 90's aesthetic and I really like Full Moon's interpretation of the vampire as well.  Their vampires are unique yet consistent and they mix the beautiful and grotesque nicely.  They don't let you forget that vampires are actually monsters like in other films.  I've seen this movie a number of times but this time around I'm reminded that most times I sit down to watch a movie what I'm really wanting is more Full Moon productions.  So more from them in the future for sure!  Kvlt

Cropsey Review - Still Not Sure If It's Real But A Fun Watch

Cropsey (2009)

This documentary melds the urban legend of the boogeyman with a hooked hand with the true story of a convicted kidnapper in New York state who is named Cropsey.  Beginning with an insane asylum expose from Geraldo Rivera when he was very young this documentary is starting off on a believable foot.  I liked this documentary until they started "uncovering" ties to satanic cults.  Although these cults exist I have to point out that real Satanists do not hurt children and they don't even believe in God or Satan for that matter.  Some of the testimonies seem to have some holes in their stories as well but overall this is a documentary worth watching.  Entertaining, fun and a little scary.

The Innkeepers Review - A New Ghost Story For Old Fans

The Innkeepers (2012)

I knew I was about to watch something super scary when I sat down to watch this as I had watched video casts of just how scary this movie is.  So needless to say I was hyped up for it and ready for the challenge.  It starts out creepy as Hell with old photos and suspenseful music and from the get go I'm getting really excited about this movie.  The characters get built up really fast and seem so real and authentic.  The music is very much like Ghostbusters with tinkling piano and atmospheric chords.  This is a fun ghost story and basically it's the last night at a historic hotel and the resident ghost decides to make one last appearance.  This movie doesn't have to rely on CGI or shock to scare me as the story and story telling is enough to get the watcher worked up.  The Innkeepers is so old school in the way it builds the story and creates suspense by using slow moving sequences.  There is a comedic break that any one who has ever worked fast food will be able to relate to.  The end leaves a little something to be desired but overall this is a fantastic film for real horror fans or fans that have been watching horror since the early 80's.  Great characters and great build up but not for the weekender.   New Classic, Essential Kvlt!
