Crypt Of The Vampire Review, Not Christopher Lee Nor Carmilla's Finest

Crypt Of The Vampire (1964)

Crypt of the Vampire or Terror in the Crypt (Netflix rental) is a black and white gem with Christopher Lee looking smashing and sharp in his period wardrobe.  This is more a story revolving around the witch ( I thought she was supposed to be a vampire) Carmilla than anything else and is loosely based on the novella about her.  The castle and it's gardens and furnishings are incredible to look at even in black and white.  There are also lots of lesbian overtones that keeps your hopes up as to if something might happen between the lovely ladies.  And although it comes really close it never seems to deliver on the girl on girl action.  Well, it was 1963.  Don't give up on Carmilla though, if this is your first time watching a story about her; her passion for women just grows as the movies continue to be made later on.  This is an Italian film and all the cast aside from Christopher Lee  have been over dubbed in English.   The scenes shot at the ruins are pretty nice and eerie but overall I have a short attention span for these types of movies.  I usually watch black and white movies to fall asleep too.  This is a great movie to chill and relax to but if you want to get your adrenaline pumping or see stunning visuals this won't fill that need.  Some nice scenes with occult and satanic themes and from a film makers prospective there  are lessons to be learned in cinematography and suspense.  But don't expect this movie to shock and awe.   The last half of the movie is way better than the first but there's a lesson there as well in creating story and tension.  This movie was a bit hard to follow for me and seems to have some faults in the story line but maybe I'm missing something.  Not essential or cult but a relaxing retro horror tale good to wind down to.
